September Average Daily Equity Volume Up 17.7 Percent Over Same Period In 2000 Year-to-date volume surpasses previous year

ChicagoOctober 2, 2001

The Option Industry Council (OIC) announced today that September average daily equity volume was 3,139,136 contracts (1,414,287 puts and 1,724,849 calls), a 17.7 increase over 2,666,287 contracts (965,850 puts and 1,700,437 calls). Year-to-date equity options volume is 547,064,002 contracts, a 12.8 percent increase over the same time frame in 2000 with 484,979,728 contracts.

Due to the tragic events in September, there were 15 trading days as compared to 20 in September 2000. September equity options volume was 47,087,042 contracts (21,214,312 puts and 25,872,730 calls), an 11.7 percent decrease over the 53,325,734 contracts (19,316,997 puts and 34,008,737 calls) traded in September 2000.

Month-end equity open interest was 73,792,376 contracts, representing a 15.6 percent increase over month-end equity open interest of 63,839,665 contracts in September 2000. At its highest point on September 21, equity open interest stood at 84,548,543 contracts.

Equity open interest, the total number of options contracts not yet exercised or allowed to expire, is seen as an indication of longer-term investing in these instruments.

"During September's difficult times, the options industry pulled together and worked as one to get back to business," said Paul Stevens, President, OIC. "The industry will continue to face challenges for a while; however, we're confident the options marketplace will continue to grow."
